ABSTRACT

One of the most common problems in drilling industry is the uncontrolled filtration of drilling mud into the formation that forms a thick filter cake on the wellbore wall. Drill pipe sticking, formation damage and production reduction are major consequences of this thick filter cake. As a result, researchers always search for drilling muds with the most suitable filtration properties to reduce these negative impacts. In this study a drilling mud has been prepared using magnetic water technology to determine its filtration properties. Magnetic water technology is a relatively new and challenging technology in which physical properties of water are modified by exposing it to a magnetic field. Drilling muds formulated with magnetic water instead of normal water proved to have better filtration properties and reduced filtrate volume.
